Pathways to Education Canada (http://www.pathwayscanada.ca/home.html) is a leading, results-oriented, community-based charitable organization with a proven model for lowering high school dropout rates and increasing participation in post-secondary school for youth from low-income communities.

The organization has gained national attention for its success in reducing dropout rates from 56% to less than 10% in Toronto’s Regent Park and is expecting to see similar results from seven other communities in Ontario and Quebec where the program is in operation. Pathways will expand to at least two more locations by the fall of 2010 and expects to be in 15-20 sites in 6-7 provinces by 2015.

The Background

Pati Greenwood, previously Executive Vice President of Philanthropy for Hamilton Health Sciences and Chair-elect for the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy - Canada, was hired in the summer of 2009 to lead Pathways to Education Canada through its next phase of growth in the development area. With the full support of the President and CEO David Hughes, previously the President & CEO of Habitat to Humanity Canada who was hired in January 2009, Pati is putting in bench strength to establish a sophisticated and sustainable fundraising program that will support Pathway’s growth throughout Canada.

The Position

The Director of Development is a new full-time position that has been created in response to the growth the organization has experienced to date and has forecasted to continue.  

In this role the successful candidate will be responsible and accountable for developing a high performance regional fundraising team to grow the major gift fundraising effort in  support of Pathway’s program expansion in key centres across Canada.

Specific responsibilities:

Hire and mentor a team of four regional fundraisers regarding major  gifts solicitation, stewardship, cultivation and donor relations

Be accountable to meet or exceed the annual fundraising target set and agreed too

Work with Cabinet and Foundation staff and others to identify and cultivate potential donors  (Nationally and Regionally) who are capable of making a gift of $100,000 or more

Develop and implement strategies to increase existing donors’ giving levels /commitments

Keep up to date records and activity reports for each donor

Work closely with other key fundraising and program members to maximize impact and overall outcomes

Assist in the business planning and annual budgeting process.

The Ideal Candidate

He or she will possess 7-10 years experience, ideally in several organizations with an unparalleled track record in resource development within the charitable/not-for-profit sector.   

In addition, the successful candidate will be:

Comfortable working with high net worth individuals

Have demonstrated success in donor prospecting and stewardship

Experienced in negotiating and closing sensitive negotiations

Strategic, creative and highly analytical with an entrepreneurial mind set

Passionate and commited to the vision of Pathways – “improve the lives of disadvantaged youth and their communities through education attainment”

Have a track record of building and retaining a ‘best in class’ team by managing, evaluating and inspiring staff

Be comfortable supporting and mobilizing strong, time-challenged senior volunteers/executives

Able to work effectively in a fast paced – ever changing environment with the requirement to manage multiple projects and work successfully unsupervised to meet deadlines

A ‘go getter’, team player and relationship builder, nimble, energetic and self-directed

An excellent verbal and written communicator with capability in French preferred

With an undergraduate degree, a Master’s Degree preferred
